St. Clare of Assisi was one of the very first followers—and lifelong friend—of the great St. Francis of Assisi. She became a saint in her own right, founding the first community of Franciscan women: the Poor Clares. Like the friars, they lived in radical gospel poverty, placing all their trust in God’s providence.

Clare was deeply prayerful and so wise in spiritual matters that even cardinals, bishops, and popes sought her counsel. In art, she is often shown holding the Blessed Sacrament because of a famous miracle: when an invading army approached her monastery, Clare lifted the Eucharist in a monstrance at the window—and the enemy fled!

St. Clare’s life is a powerful reminder of what true wealth really is. She and St. Francis imitated Christ by giving up earthly riches, confident that God would provide for all their needs. She teaches us that a person in a relationship with Jesus is already “rich.”

When we are in need, in danger, or simply going about daily life, Clare invites us to do what she did: turn to Jesus and trust Him.
