St. Elizabeth of the Visitation

“Most blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb. And how does this happen to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? For at the moment the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the infant in my womb leaped for joy.” — St. Elizabeth (Luke 1:42–44)

St. Elizabeth was the Blessed Virgin Mary’s cousin and the mother of St. John the Baptist. For many years, she and her husband, Zechariah, were unable to have children. Then, when they were already in their sixties, the Archangel Gabriel appeared to Zechariah with astonishing news: Elizabeth would bear a son.

When Mary came to visit Elizabeth during their pregnancies, Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit. She greeted Mary with the words we now pray in the Hail Mary. Mary’s response is the beautiful prayer known as the Magnificat, found in the Gospel of Luke (and printed inside the educational insert!).

Elizabeth’s story teaches us about the mercy and love of God, who hears prayers and fulfills His promises in surprising ways. She reminds us that God’s mercy is a gift to receive—and to share with others.
