The Cry of Jesus Crucified and Forsaken

The Work of Mary, or Focolare Movement, came into being in 1943 in the city of Trent, through Chiara Lubich, a teacher who gathered a few companions around her for a journey of faith and of life.  They experienced the perennial novelty of the gospel as a source of unity and profound renewal of the whole person.  From that initial group, the Focolare has continuously spread, far and wide.  Today it counts several million persons from all over the world, including bishops, priests and religious, families, consecrated men and women, and youth, all united in the focolare (hearth), like the family of Nazareth.

Its remarkable expansion raises the question of why this Movement, appearing now at the dawn of the third millennium as one of the Church's most lively components, has such vitality.  What is its secret, its innermost soul, the nucleus from which such great spiritual energy pours out with so much light, such new evangelical freshness and love, which is shared in such joyous fraternal simplicity?

The author offers us the constant element that runs throughout its history in these words:  "If we look now at our Movement, we see that it... starts with a desire to love - to love God, rediscovered... as love, as Father.  We too translated, and still translate, this love into doing God's will, which is summed up in the new commandment: 'Love one another as I have loved you' (Jn 15:12)"
