This devotional booklet traces the beautiful and hope-filled origins of the devotion to Our Lady Undoer of Knots. The story begins with a young husband who, in hope of saving his marriage, sought guidance from a Jesuit priest. As they prayed together for Mary’s intercession, the priest symbolically untied the knots in the husband’s wedding ribbon. Years later, after the couple had reconciled, their grandson commissioned the painting Mary Untier of Knots by Johann Schmidtner, which came to represent this unique Marian devotion.

Nearly three centuries later, another young Jesuit priest—Jorge Bergoglio, now Pope Francis—encountered this image while studying in Germany. Deeply moved by the painting of Mary patiently undoing the knots in a long cord, he brought a copy back to Argentina and began promoting the devotion. He recognized in the image a powerful reminder of how Mary helps untangle the difficulties and hardships—the “knots”—in our lives.

When he became pope, devotion to Our Lady Undoer of Knots spread widely, inspiring countless faithful to seek consolation, hope, and encouragement through her loving and powerful intercession.
